WFCP SDGs Affinity Group Symposia: A Global Success

On 14 October 2024, the WFCP Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Affinity Group hosted an inspiring virtual symposia ‘Global Perspectives in Embedding the SDGs in Vocational Training’. The event attracted 270 registrants from over 50 countries, showcasing the global commitment to sustainable development in vocational education.  It was scheduled at a time to suit Australasian members, a long-term aim of the SDG Affinity Group.

The symposia kicked off with a compelling keynote by Anna Rose, CEO of Environmental Leadership Australia. Anna highlighted the urgent need to address climate change, urging participants to swiftly reduce emissions and leverage their networks to advance the SDGs.

Karen Dickinson, General Manager of TAFE Queensland Gold Coast, shared fascinating insights on the Robina campus, which seamlessly integrates sustainability into every aspect of its operations, from curriculum to governance.

Chris Long, Head of Sustainability at Bridgend College, UK, showcased the Welsh Government’s and the college’s innovative strides towards net zero, featuring innovative examples from renewable energy to sustainable agriculture.

Judi Varga-Toth, Manager of Impact Climate Programs and Partnerships at ImpAct-Sustainability Colleges and Institutes Canada, highlighted CICan’s extensive reach across Canada. She described their focus on the SDG Accord, Indigenous education protocols, and the 50/30 Ecosystem Challenge which aims to see women holding 50% of senior roles as well as 30% employees from underrepresented groups.

Ken Barrientos, Programme Officer at UNEVOC-UNESCO, Germany, outlined UNEVOC’s network of 233 centres in 151 countries, reaching 66.7 million students and 2 million teachers, describing multiple initiatives in greening TVET, and highlighting the numerous resources available.

The event concluded with an interactive workshop where participants brainstormed ways to embed the SDGs in their institutions. The symposia was a tremendous success, underscoring the pivotal role vocational training institutions play in advancing the SDGs globally.
