Effective leaders are emotionally intelligent: self-aware, empathetic, and resilient. They can see the world through the eyes of those they lead, and to understand how others feel. The need for emotionally intelligent leaders has, arguably, never been greater than in today’s complex, uncertain and challenging pandemic driven world.
This webinar will illuminate what it means to be an emotionally intelligent leader through the three lenses of a published college academic in the field, a leadership coach and a successful college President. The webinar will be directed by Dr. Phil Ker, executive director at PIN, and our presenters are:
Associate Professor Dr. Lesley Gill – Otago Polytechnic
Associate Professor Lesley Gill teaches Strategic Management, Leadership, Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour at the School of Business, Otago Polytechnic, Te Pukenga, Dunedin, New Zealand. She supervises and examines Masters and Doctoral students and is the Programme Leader for the Polytechnic’s Masters of Applied Management.
Her PhD explored Emotional Intelligence training design with her work being published in New Zealand and internationally. Her book, Exploring Practical Perspectives of Emotional Intelligence: Harnessing the Power Within was released in hardcover in May 2021 with a paperback version due for release in March 2022.
A major focus of her current research is resilience training, self-awareness, empathy and empathy burnout. Lesley co-edited and authored an Organisations and Management textbook. She was the Chief Editor of Scope Journal – Change Strategies 2019 and is a co-editor and contributor to the Otago Polytechnic Health Discourse blog. She is also involved in several community based not-for-profit organisations.
Leadership coach, Dr. Joe Sertich – Minnesota
Joe Sertich has been President/CEO of Longyear Incorporated of Chisholm since its inception in 1983. He is a certified Coach specializing in Executive Coaching. He owned and operated the Chisholm Ambulance Service for over 38 years. Dr. Sertich’s professional career included being the founding President of the Northeast Minnesota Higher Education District for thirteen years. Dr. Sertich was designated President Emeritus by the Minnesota Colleges and Universities Board.
Dr. Sertich believes the global pandemic has taught us important lessons about resiliency and emotional intelligence where leadership development is the best resource to positively affect the disruption and uncertainty of a changing environment.
He has a B.S. in Education, and a Masters in Educational Administration from Bemidji State University and his Ed.D. degree is from The Leadership Academy of the University of Minnesota in Educational Policy and Administration. Sertich lives with his wife Nancy in Minnesota, USA and has two grown children.
College President, Dr. Larry Rosia – Saskatchewan Polytechnic
As President and CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Dr. Larry Rosia leads the province’s primary provider of technical education and skills training.
Dr. Rosia’s career in education spans more than 35 years, as an Instructor, Program Chair, Revenue Generating Coordinator, Marketing Manager, and Dean. He has more than 25 years of leadership experience in educational administration and has served in advisory roles to community, provincial and municipal committees. He is currently serving as Chair, Director, or Board Member for many Regional, National and International organizations, including: the Business/Higher Education Roundtable (BHER), CANARIE, the Community Colleges for International Development (CCID), the International Mineral Innovation Institute (IMII), Polytechnics Canada, Post-Secondary International Network (PIN), the Chair Academy, the Saskatchewan Labour Market Task Force (LMTF), the University of Regina Senate, and the World Federation of Colleges & Polytechnics (WFCP).
Dr. Rosia is a well-respected ambassador for the post-secondary community and has authored a book titled “The Successful College President.”
