As countries emerge from the pandemic (which they will eventually do) what should post-secondary institutions look like? What role do they have in rebuilding local, regional and national economies? What capabilities should they develop for both internal success and to maximise their effectiveness in economic recovery and to underpin social cohesion?

 

Guest Presenters:

Stuart Cullum, President, Olds College, Canada

Stuart Cullum is an executive leader with experience in private industry as well as the finance, post-secondary and not-for-profit sectors. He joined Olds College in November, 2016 and was appointed as President on July 1, 2017.

For more than 20 years Stuart has been working in the post-secondary, innovation and agriculture sectors. During this time, Stuart and his team established programming and centres for research, teaching and learning, company development and entrepreneurship – attracting partnerships and more than $125 million in direct external investment.

Stuart also farmed commercially in the Three Hills, Alberta area until 2009 and has served on numerous boards and committees, mainly within the agriculture, post-secondary and innovation and technology sectors.

 

Larry Rosia, President and CEO, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Canada

As President and CEO of Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Dr. Larry Rosia leads the province’s primary provider of technical education and skills training.

Dr. Rosia’s career in education spans more than 35 years, as an Instructor, Program Chair, Revenue Generating Coordinator, Marketing Manager, and Dean. He has more than 25 years of leadership experience in educational administration and has served in advisory roles to community, provincial and municipal committees. He is currently serving as Chair, Director, or Board Member for many Regional, National and International organizations, including: the Business/Higher Education Roundtable (BHER), CANARIE, the Community Colleges for International Development (CCID), the International Mineral Innovation Institute (IMII), Polytechnics Canada, Post-Secondary International Network (PIN), the Chair Academy, the Saskatchewan Labour Market Task Force (LMTF), the University of Regina Senate, and the World Federation of Colleges & Polytechnics (WFCP).

Dr. Rosia is a well-respected ambassador for the post-secondary community and has authored a book titled “The Successful College President.”

 

Phil Ker, Executive Director, Post-Secondary International Network

Phil is currently the Executive Director of PIN (Post-Secondary International Network) and is also an education consultant specialising in leadership development and curriculum design, drawing on a lifetime of experience in both fields.

Phil was at the helm of Otago Polytechnic for sixteen years, widely acknowledged as one of New Zealand’s leading vocational institutions with a strong reputation for innovation. Phil’s tenure as CEO included leading Otago Polytechnic through the early stages of the covid-19 pandemic and the resultant lock down in New Zealand. He believes passionately in the leadership role that post-secondary institutions do and can play in social development and social cohesion and will focus on this in his presentation.
