The 8th World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) 2016 World Congress opened today with a spectacular opening ceremonies showcasing local Brazilian talent. The three-day event, from September 23 to 25, 2016 is hosted by Conselho Nacional das Instituições da Rede Federal de Educação Profissional, Científica e Tecnológica (CONIF) and Instituto Federal de Espíritu Santo (IFES). The 2016 World Congress will examine The Role of Professional Education for the 21st Century with close to 900 Brazilian and international leaders of professional and technical education and training.

Delegates at the World Congress, representing over 30 countries, will participate in discussions about the future of professional and technical education and the challenges of the future. Keynote Dr. Robert Cowen, an expert in comparative education, spoke on professional education around the world as it was in the 20th Century. The World Congress will also hear from Italian philosopher Domenico de Masi about perspectives for future society.

On the occasion of the World Congress the WFCP will unveil its second universal declaration, The Vitória Declaration on Inclusion. The Declaration recognizes that the domestic diversity of signatory institutions does not always reflect its community’s diversity. Achieving equitable education for people regardless of gender, physical ability, economic situation, race or ethnicity, is a cornerstone of the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. Through the Vitória Declaration on Inclusion, the Federation urges its members to achieve the goal of equal access to all for professional education.

The Congress was preceded by an international Youth Camp with 34 students from Brazil and around the world, a Leadership Development workshop for Presidents and senior executives, and campus tours of IFES. The World Congress precedes the annual Brazilian gathering of rectors, Reditec, on September 26 – 27.
